RE:Wal Mart Stores Associates: I need your opinion on your job
(Date Posted:11/23/2008 16:59 PM)
Thank you Liesreality,
I've posted the same request on different Wal Mart and retail forums. Members answered me that employees, more particularly in Wal Mart stores "can be suspicious, are afraid to talk because of the intimidation used by the firm". I have encountered fear/distrust with retail employees in France too.
For example, in Carrefour (The second biggest retail group after Wal-Mart but i don't know if you ever have heard of it in US?), employees hesitate to talk about their job fearing to loose it. Whereas there are unionized people in some stores and firms (what can be considered as a sign of freedom of speech) people are usually suspicious and I have to deploy all the means to convince them that I'm not a spy sent by X or Y firm.
Unfortunately, in the case of Wal Mart, I can't come in store (until 2009) to meet you directly, which could make things easier and less un-personal.
Considering my request, I insist on the fact that interviews are anonymous: You can give me the name you want, i don't care about it (neither your Store),
the only thing I need is your opinion about your work. It can be made by phone (When I'll call you, you'll be sure I'm not a Wal Mart sentinel hearing my accent) or by mail sending me the email adress you wish the Interview guide to be sent: These interview methods are obviously anonymous.
For those who still doubt and/or are curious of the retail in France, I will try to translate my articles and papers and post them. (If you can read french, you can find some on Google, writing my name).
So I would appreciate if you accept to take time to answer me.
Thanks

I appreciate your request, but have to decline personally. I will leave it up incase anyone else chooses to give thier input. I do agree with you that many workers are afraid of losing thier jobs, but few want a union in, because they feel they are giving away thier earned money, even though in the case of walmart they would be making more than thier dues are, and would have less to fear about losing thier job, due to walmarts large size. To each his own though.
I wish you the best.

"...but few want a union in, because they feel they are giving away their earned money". Can you please explain. I think I do not understand what you have said.
For my part, I don't say that unions mean freedom of speech but, for example in France, most of the employees working in firms without unions would like to have unionized representatives and have that idea. It's a shared idea. I have heard about a conflict between WM employees and the firm a few years ago on this point. So, I'm interested in theses differences of values and representations between the countries, areas, firms and careers, which can reveal the way people live their jobs.

Glad it works out in France. France and U.S. appear to be different.

No answer...Ok. hypothesis: -Does my english sucks? -Is my request understandable? -Maybe my first post is too serious/ long/ boring? -45 min (max) is too long for you? I can make shorter interviews and/or send it by mail if you want.
Please, any answer is welcome (even if it's negative)

no your english is fine...you have to understand our position when we decline and leave it at that....this is a company that can make things very difficult if not impossible for us if they wanted....if someone wants to speak to you that is wonderful for them, but i am agreeing here with the owner by saying no....please accept our answer and leave your post for others to contact you if they so wish

Merci beaucoup for your answer fallenangelkelly,
Please do not take my solicitations bad. On forums, people click and read but a few comment or let their opinion. Your point of view is important to me: I can understand better whith your answer (and Liesreality's too) whereas a silence is hardly interpretable. If my messages give you the impression that I want to force you to do an interview, It's not my goal at all (language and distance can cause misundertandings). I just wanted to understand. Feel free to contact me or not, I accept it.

Hello, Thank for your answers (positives & negatives). For
those newly arrived, here is a small reminder message. I put a direct

Learning12, It's not a trap or a spectacular journalistic investigation about WM. It's a qualitative, descriptive and long survey about the main International retail firms (I'm trying to find common points & discrepancies between firms and contexts and their influence on orientation to work). I don't want to be partial, to say WM is good or bad. As you can see in the interview guide, questions are about your daily work, relationships with other associates and so on. I have several opinions but most of them comes from websites whose name contains WM and blows/sucks... Obviously, I'd'like to (counter)weight the opinions encoutered. My goal is not to make money on your back with a book, just to achieve a Phd...and I'm pretty sure I'm not a whacko but I understand you uncomfortable.
